Louis Marie dit Sainte-Marie & Mathurine Goard

Louis Marie dit Sainte-Marie: A Pioneer in New France, Carignan-Salières Regiment

Louis Marie, son of Louis Marie and Marguerite Peigné, was born in Saint-Symphorien de Tours, in Touraine (Indre-et-Loire), around 1634.

He arrived in New France on August 17, 1665, with the Carignan regiment, la Varenne company, aboard the ship "Le Justice". He received the scapular of Mount Carmel on October 10, 1665, in Quebec. After working on the construction of Fort Sainte-Thérèse, his company was sent to garrison in Montreal until 1668. He chose to remain in the colony after demobilization [1, 2, 4].

Mathurine Goard: Filles du Roi

Mathurine Gouard, a "Fille du Roy" (King's Daughter), was born around 1648 in the parish of Saint-Sulpice, faubourg Saint-Germain-des-Prés, Paris, daughter of Gilles Gouard and Catherine Léger. She arrived in the colony in 1666 and was recorded in Montreal in 1667 as a "marriageable girl" living with the Daughters of the Congregation. She knew how to sign.

The marriage contract was signed on May 21, 1667, before notary Bénigne Basset. They married on May 31, 1667, in Montreal [1, 2, 4, 5].

Later Life and Land

Louis Marie's early years were characterized by numerous land transactions (acquisitions and sales of concessions on the Island of Montreal, in Varennes, and in Longueuil), suggesting he was a land speculator rather than a farmer [1].
